About the Play
Yes, this is a musical adaptation of Stephen King’s classic story about a teenage girl who goes from being abused at home and bullied at school to unleashing vengence on the entire student body on prom night. After a notorious Broadway debut in 1988, the show vanished from the musical theatre repertoire for years before returning in a brilliantly reworked and critically acclaimed 2012 New York production.
Available Roles
Note: The roles of Carrie and Margaret have already been cast. All other roles are available and open to actors of any race or ethnicity. Age listed is for the character, not the actor playing them.
Sue Snell | Senior in high school / Female presenting
A straight-A student who’s been popular her entire life, she’s remarkably level-headed for her age. Her unthinking participation in a cruel act of bullying causes a crisis of conscience that leads her on a journey to try to right things. Vocally, she has a pop ballad voice – mezzo range – that delivers sweet sincerity and strength.
Tommy Ross | Senior in high school / Male presenting
Popular star athlete, valedictorian, and all-around stand-out. He’s the boy that all the girls want to be with, and all the boys want to be. Yet he also has unexpected sensitivity and is just starting to mine his personal life and feelings – a budding poet. His voice should have an effortless pop quality with a tenor range.
Chris Hargensen | Senior in high school / Female presenting
Rich, spoiled-rotten, and wickedly funny, Chris is a popular beauty whose arrogant self-assurance makes her believe that the rules don’t apply to her. Loaded with sexual dynamite, she has serious daddy issues and anger-management issues. Her voice is pop-rock percussive and powerful, and a mezzo range.
Billy Nolan | Senior in high school / Male presenting
Now in his sixth year in high school, Billy’s a sexy, stupid-like-a-fox bad boy whose wise mouth troublemaking has led him to spend more time in detention than in class. All these qualities make it easy for his girlfriend Chris to manipulate him to do her bidding. His voice is that of a wailing rocker and is in the mid baritone range.
Miss Gardner | early 30s to mid-40s / Female presenting
This girls’ P.E. teacher can be a strict disciplinarian if necessary, but when Carrie arouses her maternal instinct, she surprises herself by also revealing a protective “fairy godmother” side. Her voice is warm and strong, just like the woman. Lower mezzo range.
Mr. Stephens | mid-30s to 50-ish / Male presenting
This well-intentioned English teacher and guidance counselor struggles to help his students realize their potential. A dedicated educator, he’s stretched thin in his duties, woefully underpaid, and a bit overwhelmed as to how to handle the Billy Nolans of the classroom combat zone. The actor playing Mr. Stephens will double as Reverend Bliss. Vocal requirement is a mid-range baritone.
6 additional ensemble members | Seniors in high school / 3 female and 3 male presenting
More than just “the chorus”, each ensemble member is named and has a unique character to play.

About the Play
Based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German trans woman who managed to survive both the Nazi onslaught and the repressive East German Communist regime.
Available Roles
Charlotte von Mahlsdorf | Only actors who identify as trans or nonbinary will be considered for this role. Actors of all ages and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
Theatrical, contradictory, and endlessly charming. Charlotte is, among many things, a storyteller and a collector who makes it her mission to preserve the people and places she loves. This role is highly demanding: Charlotte controls the pacing of the play and has several long monologues. The actor will also be asked to speak in a German accent and learn several German phrases (a dialect coach will be provided to whomever is cast). Comfort with a German accent is preferred but not necessary for the audition.
Ensemble | Actors of all ethnicities, ages, and gender identities are encouraged to audition.
Three actors will portray the more than 30 other characters in the play. These will include the playwright Doug Wright, the journalist John Marks, Aunt Luis, the German cultural minister, and dozens of others. Specific roles will be divided once the cast is set. Some of the roles include SS and Stasi officers and are sometimes perpetrators of abuse. If you wish to discuss how this material will appear in the show, you are welcome to contact the director.
A Note on Language and Content Warning
The play uses an outdated term in reference to Charlotte’s gender identity. While this term is not acceptable today, it is the term Charlotte used to describe herself and thus will appear as written. This play includes themes of transphobia, homophobia, sexual assault, and abuse. No audition sides will include potentially triggering language.
If you would like to discuss how this material appears in the show, or have any other questions, you may contact the director at kwalsh1058@gmail.com.
