"MASTER HAROLD"... AND THE BOYS
MARCH 22 - 24, 2019
The searing coming-of-age story that won Zakes Mokae a Tony Award and brought Danny Glover back to the New York stage for a Roundabout Theatre revival now finds its way to the stage of The 5 & Dime. Considered by many to be Fugard’s masterpiece, "Master Harold...and the Boys surrounds the life of a white teen who has grown up in the affectionate company of two black waiters working in his mother’s tea room in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. But when old family secrets stir up lingering demons, both “Master Harold” and “the Boys” are quickly reminded of their true loyalties.
Renowned dramatist Athol Fugard sets this “lyrical,” “shattering,” and “enduring” (New York Times) parable against the backdrop of 1950s South African apartheid as a stark reminder that institutional oppression often creates deep and lasting personal repercussions.
